A Smooth and Showy Hanging Marvel

The Echinocereus gentryi (often classified as Echinocereus scheeri subsp. gentryi) is a fascinating departure from the typical “spiny” hedgehog cactus. Native to the rugged canyons of Sonora and Chihuahua, Mexico, this cactus is prized for its unusual, smooth texture and its dramatic, pendulous growth habit, making it a “must-have” for hanging displays.

• Unique “Cucumber” Stems: Unlike its prickly relatives, this cactus features soft, cylindrical stems that are nearly spineless. These dark green, “naked” stems resemble small cucumbers or sausages, reaching up to 12 inches in length before they begin to elegantly drape over the sides of a container.

• Massive Trumpet Blooms: The true show begins in late spring to early summer. The plant produces oversized, trumpet-shaped flowers in a vibrant magenta or rose-pink. These blooms are incredibly showy, often featuring a paler throat and staying open for several days—longer than many other Echinocereus species.

• Low-Profile Spination: While it is a cactus, its spines are minute, white, and often barely visible to the naked eye. This makes it a “user-friendly” plant that is much easier to handle and repot than its more aggressive cousins.

• Clumping and Trailing: As it matures, it forms dense, heavy clumps of multiple stems. In its natural habitat, it often hangs from cliff faces, a look you can replicate by using a high-quality hanging basket or a tall pedestal pot.
